Shower plumbing
Shower plumbing fixtures include shower heads, tub faucets,
and controls. Plumbing codes for newer homes or homes undergoing remodeling
may require the use of pressure balanced valves to reduce instances
of scalding. The pressure at which cold water is being sent may fluctuate
due to such instances as a toilet being flushed elsewhere in the house.
If this happens, less cold water may be sent to cool hot water. It
is not uncommon for shower plumbing to cause burns in this way. This
is true even though the hot water may not be increased.
This issue with shower plumbing is not simply solved by turning down
the temperature of the water heater. Virtually all thermostats for water
heaters take measurements at the lower portion of the heater. The water
at the top of the heater may actually be significantly hotter than the
thermostat displays. For this reason, anti-scald features are wiser
solutions.
